Psalm 22 stands out as perhaps the clearest and most compelling picture of Jesus’ death and resurrection in the Old Testament. As Charles Spurgeon said, “This is beyond all others The Psalm of the Cross.” Christ himself connected his death and resurrection to this psalm. Jesus prayed the first words of Psalm 22 from the cross: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46). Jesus was not only saying that God had abandoned him, he quoted these words in particular so we would understand his suffering and death in the light of Psalm 22. It is also possible that Christ’s last words on the cross echo the last words of this psalm as well. The words “It is finished” (John 19:30) could be an allusion or loose quotation of Psalm 22:31, “he has done it.” If that is the case, then Jesus was saying that everything God promised in the second half of this psalm was as good as done. His suffering would save the world, and the nations would turn to God.
